How to Sleep in a Moving Car

If you have a long road trip coming up and are lucky enough not to be the one responsible for the driving, you can look forward to catching up on some sleep during your journey. Ensuring you get plenty of rest prior to arriving at your destination is a good way of ensuring you get the most out of your excursion, but enjoying quality sleep in a moving vehicle isn’t always easy.

Block Out All Distractions

One of the biggest obstacles to overcome when sleeping in a moving car is external stimuli. Vehicle noises, street lights and other disturbances can make falling and staying asleep all but impossible. An easy way to overcome this is to invest in a quality sleep mask and some reliable earplugs. A sleep mask is particularly useful if you plan on sleeping during daylight ours. When it comes to blocking out auditory distractions, some people find listening to music or podcasts useful. If you’re someone who prefers to drift off with low-volume playlists, standard in-ear headphones should do the trick. However, for best results, you should think about investing in some silicone earplugs.

Seat Adjustments and Neck Support

Many people find it difficult to fall asleep in an upright position. If this applies to you, play around with the incline of your car seat until you find a position that suits you. Regardless of how your car seat is adjusted, always ensure you are wearing your seatbelt when sleeping in a moving vehicle. This is not only a legal requirement and essential for your safety, but will also ensure you remain relatively immobile as you rest. Being secure in your seat will reduce the amount you move around as the vehicle turns corners, comes to a halt or accelerates. The less your body moves around as you sleep, the less likely you are to wake up prematurely.

You should also think about purchasing a quality neck pillow. The headrest section of most car seats offers little in the way of adjustment and don’t offer much in the way of padding. If you plan on sleeping in an upright position during a car journey, a neck pillow is particularly useful and will minimise the chance of you waking up with painful cramps and stiffness.
